San Francisco’s Public Library has become a hive of drug dealer activity, with dealers regularly meeting up with customers outside the library.
As reported by the Daily Caller, the San Francisco Standard interviewed one such resident, 36-year-old Ted Disbennett, who is homeless. Disbennett said that the library had become a new hotspot for drug dealing and use in the aftermath of the city government’s crackdown on public drug use in May. Disbennett and other homeless residents of San Francisco have been moving from one location to the next, with the library simply being the latest.
“Everywhere else, they’re like, ‘keep it moving, keep it moving,” said Disbennett. “I think it’s horrible.”
Another drug user, 32-year-old Donald, said “I don’t exactly know why it’s okay here. This is like the main spot now.”
Despite San Francisco’s far-left lean and previous past stances in favor of liberal drug use, the city government has been cracking down more swiftly on public drug use. Areas that have seen drug activity cleared out by the SFPD include Tenderloin and UN Plaza. On Wednesday, a single operation led to 42 arrests for narcotics peddling.
“Our officers will continue to make arrests and hold individuals committing crimes accountable for their actions,” said SFPD Chief Bill Scott in a press release.
As a result of these actions, the San Francisco Medical Examiner’s office reports that accidental overdoses in the city have been on the decline for the second month in a row. In the month of January, the number of overdoses was 72; in February, it fell to 66, then fell again to 61 in March.\
